I’m a sucker for new features. This “New Feature” roundup is perfect because it addresses an area of technology that I’m slowly converting to an avid user: image editing.
One of the big changes in the new Photoshop is the addition of the Adobe Stock library. The stock library offers some truly amazing images, like the one above. It is accessible from within Photoshop through the app. I wonder what other creative features Adobe will add to their other apps, besides other stock and bundled libraries, in the future. In any case, getting back to the issue of speed, a real Photoshop fan will probably tell you that it is more of an issue of workflow, or more specifically how to organize files and perform tasks more easily. It comes with an updated File browser too, that lets you change the default Perspective viewing mode to either the old standard 2D view or a new Installed perspective mode. (This is just to make it better for the Lightroom user, of course.) I do not personally know what is the best perspective to use for what one is working on, or what settings to use when exporting. I hear some people having success with the Installed perspective, while others feel that the 3D realm is far superior. All this said, though, Adobe did seem to anticipate some of these workflow issues and addressed them in the new application. First, as you may have noticed, the file browser has been streamlined and expanded. In fact, you can now access a variety of built-in and third-party libraries from within the file browser. You can also use the app to make your own online portfolio. And of course, if you are a Lightroom user, you can now also synchronize that with Photoshop. Although syncing just the shadow and midtones information, since that is what it is supposed to be. You can also tell Photoshop what to load first, and, more importantly for the purist, how to handle angled and panoramic images. Oh, and if you are a MOCCA (Manually OCR Characters) user, Photoshop offers a new better performance tool. Just about every professional tool has an updated interface, even Community, which at times can be a bit idiosyncratic. Another obvious plus is that if you work with multiple graphics devices, such as tablets and mobile phones, you really don’t need Exchange anymore. Photoshop is a desktop graphics application and we have most of the functionality we need already in our mobile devices. This will make our life that much simpler. So what more can Photoshop do? We are looking forward to seeing apps for subscription services like Adobe Family and Lightroom, as well as the new Fine Art Collection, which we cannot wait to get our hands on. To use the Action Recorder, you need to install a plug-in, which is already available on the Web. The plug-in asks to install additional software, but we found that works just fine.
