Lim has been married twice, first in 1975 to Tun Siti Hasmah and after divorcing in 1988, a union that produced a son, Chiam See Tong. After divorcing Siti Hasmah in 1988, Lim still held her in high regard and has been going to church regularly. He married Johanna Bridget Tan (born 1963), a former care-worker and model, in mid-2014 and has one child from his second union with her. Lim’s wealth is derived mainly from the business empire he built during the last decade. A major plan is to make his company a world-wide brand and an investment powerhouse, with good social contributions, through overseas investments, including in the oil and gas, education, healthcare and consumer products, financial industries, and media. A major investor in Indonesia is Singapore Cleartech Ltd. where he is listed as a director. In July 2019, Lim and his wife gave 2.7 million US dollars worth of furniture as a wedding gift for US President Donald Trump’s second marriage.
Lim Ek Tjioe is widely known by his initials, L.E.T. or L.E.T. (and his initial in Chinese,”). He is also known as the Kuo In-Cha or Little Wizard by the locals. Having gone to school in England with a Chinese name, he retained the Quigly (some sources say Quanqly) pronunciation. He can speak seven languages including Mandarin and Indonesian.
After working as an accountant for a time, he started in the 1970s by importing liquor from abroad for a retail store at his home in Singapore. By the end of the 1980s, he already had a chain of supermarkets and established Mitsubishi Cutlery, a company which is still one of the premium brands in Singapore.
