One of the things that can be quite stressful in dealing with diabetes is monitoring your blood sugar throughout the day. On days when you feel pretty good about your diet and exercise you might get a higher than normal reading. It can be quite discouraging to feel like all of your sacrifices and efforts did not have their intended results.
The reality is that while we can certainly increase the odds that we will get lower blood sugar readings through our lifestyle choices, we can’t guarantee that all of our exercise and self-discipline to stay away from high-carb foods will pay dividends. We are reminded of this everytime we see higher than expected blood sugar readings after an evening when you felt you did everything right.
So how do you deal with what feels like you’ve been cheated out of a certain victory? After all, shouldn’t you see the tangible results of eating healthy and maintaining your workout?
Sometimes you will see those great results after all of that effort, but oftentimes you will get blood sugar readings that would be more indicative of someone who just gorged on pizza and pasta.
First of all, it’s completely natural to feel some discouragment when this happens, but in order to maintain your motivation and focus on staying the course, keep in mind that you can’t always dictate how your body will behave. Sometimes your body has its own agenda and despite all of your best efforts it will continue to generate glucose on its own, with or without pizza and pasta.
All you can do is continue to believe that your lifestyle choices will ultimately make a difference and will make all the difference over the long haul. Keep in mind that you are running a marathon, not a sprint. Remember that the next time your blood sugar readings disappoint you.
