Using Exceptions to handle null data in SQL Server

I was doing some research for a web site I’m working on. I’m not even going to be able to implement this, but the point is that I want to know if this is possible or recommended.
If a value is missing from a table in SQL Server, how do you handle it? Should I do a SELECT for that null value, a SELECT without that column, or should I throw an exception? Should the exception just be thrown or should it be caught? I’m developing in ASP.NET MVC with Entity Framework.

One approach, or perhaps even a combination of the approaches below, is to set the column to allow NULL values:
alter table foo alter column col text null

Then, insert the column would (as @ScottChamberlain says) be required to set it to NOT NULL before attempting to insert the NULL. The data can come in from a variety of sources, so having this flexibility would be handy.
However, if you’re 100% certain that the column is populated on all rows – and I know that’s the case for most people here – then you can just select the nullable column and use ISNULL/COALESCE:
select isnull(col, ‘default value’), *
from table

If you’re trying to track down this problem down later, if you’re an academic and never plan to monetize, I’d document this approach in a database journal.
